Gloria Steinem Talks Nadia Murad and ‘On Her Shoulders’

Created with RYOT
RYOT came to VICE to collaboratively promote their Sundance winning, Oscar-nominated documentary ‘ On Her Shoulders’, a poignant documentary following a young Yahzidi girl who escaped ISIS-enslavement.

The Approach

We recorded an episode of Broadly Talks Film, an extension of the VICE Talks Film franchise, inviting the legendary Gloria Steinem and talented director Alexandria Bombach to discuss the film. Broadly, as our women / LGBTQIA focused vertical, was the perfect platform for the content partnership.

Film Synopsis: Nadia Murad, a 23-year-old Yazidi, (a 2018 Nobel Prize winner) survived genocide and sexual slavery committed by ISIS. Repeating her story to politicians and media, she finds herself thrust onto the world stage as the voice of her people. Away from the podium, she navigates bureaucracy, fame, and people's ‘good’ intentions.

Creative development, talent briefing

In this episode, we will learn about Alexandria’s motivations for the film –– expanding on why she chose to go behind the scenes with the young Nadia Murad, exploring the psychological and physical toll each public testimony and UN hearing took on her. As we see excerpts of Nadia’s story, we learn what it means to represent an entire nation.
